A bicycle ride is the ideal way to discover the charms of the area, as you pedal your way along the sinuous road that leads to the vineyard of Cos d’Estournel only minutes away or visit the shimmering Gironde Estuary, a fascinating contrast against the perfectly aligned vines of Cos that it borders.

It is a place where nature is constantly metamorphosing: gray cloud cover is quickly chased away by blue skies, and morning mists evaporate as swiftly as they appear. The influence of ocean breezes, the rise and fall of the tides and the changes between forest and marshland create a feeling of constant movement.

Along the shores of the Gironde, you will discover the region’s traditional wooden fishing huts. Equipped with elegant square nets, they sit above the water at the ends of piers perched on long stilts of acacia. A precious part of local heritage, more than five hundred of these fishing huts dot the banks of the estuary.

The next stop along your journey is Saint-Estèphe and its twenty-six villages and hamlets. Beyond a rich legacy of growing and producing wines, Saint-Estèphe also has a fascinating history. Rebuilt in the eighteenth century, its baroque church is one of its most outstanding features. Light floods the church through its stained-glass windows, reflecting off sparkling crystal chandeliers, making it a lovely place to visit before heading to the village cemetery. Here lies Louis-Gaspard d’Estournel under a tombstone engraved with the eternal tribute “Cos, reconnaissant”, or “Cos, grateful.”

Culinary delights await at the end of the day, when the Chef at La Maison d’Estournel brings the spirit of Saint-Estèphe alive. Products are locally sourced, and your taste buds will delight in vegetables grown in our on-site garden, bread baked by a local baker and choice meat from the village’s exceptional butcher.
